Module-1 (15 Hrs)
Chapter 1: - Fundamentals
Hooke’s law, Elastic constants, Shear force and bending moment diagram, Bending equation, Beam deflection, Compound stress and Mohr’s circle, working stresses, modes of mechanical failure, theories of failure. (5 Hrs)
Chapter 2: - Stress Concentration and Fatigue Failure
Stress concentration, fatigue, Soderberg equation, members subjected to steady and alternating loads. (5 Hrs)
Chapter 3: - Design of Shafts and Keys
Shafting, ASME design of transmission shafts, keys, design of square and rectangular key joints. (5 Hrs)
Module-2 (14 Hrs)
Chapter 4: - Design of Welded Joints
Welded joints, modes of failure, strength and efficiency of the joint. (5 Hrs)
Chapter 5: - Design of Springs
Stresses in coil springs of round and square c/s, deflection of coil springs, design of compression and
tension springs. (4 hrs)
Chapter 6: - Design of Flexible Machine Elements
Flat belt, V belt drives rope drives. (5 hrs)
Module-3 (16 Hrs)
Chapter 7: - Design of Gears
Gears : Spur, Helical, Bevel, Worm gear, nomenclature, Lewis equation, Lewis form factor, design based
on strength dynamic and wear loads (6 hrs)
Chapter 8: - Lubrication and Journal Bearings
Thin, Thick film lubrication, Theory of hydrodynamic lubrication, Design of journal bearings (5 hrs)
Chapter 9: Antifriction Bearings
Life of bearing, Bearing design subjected to static load and dynamic load, Selection of antifriction
bearings. (5 hrs)
